dc.description.sponsorshipThe focus of this thesis is twofold; first the focus is on general standardization theory, and thereafter the theory is applied to the Office Open XML (OOXML) case. The thesis analyses the economic impacts of compatibility standards, and hereunder applies the results to examine the economic impacts of the international document standard OOXML. A focus will be on markets characterised by network externalities. Another focus will be comparing the private and social incentives for standardization. In order to answer the research questions, relevant economic theories is presented and economic models are derived. The authors will also present independent work and new interesting findings.no_NO
